Christian Baptism - What is it?
Christian Baptism is an essential part of the Christian experience as it provides a way for the Believer to demonstrate their faith before the Church and the world and to show that our attitude towards God has changed. When a Believer is baptised it is a show of the candidate’s commitment to a deeper walk with Christ and identifying with the name of Jesus Christ.
Two requirements are crucial before baptism:
- The candidate must come to a ‘Saving knowledge’ of the Lord Jesus and confess Him before others
- The candidate must understand the significance of what baptism is and what it is not.
Christian Baptism signifies your burial and resurrection
1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
4 THEREFORE WE ARE BURIED WITH HIM BY BAPTISM INTO DEATH: THAT LIKE AS CHRIST WAS RAISED UP FROM THE DEAD BY THE GLORY OF THE FATHER, EVEN SO WE ALSO SHOULD WALK IN NEWNESS OF LIFE.
5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.
8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:
9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.
10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.
11 LIKEWISE RECKON YE ALSO YOURSELVES TO BE DEAD INDEED UNTO SIN, BUT ALIVE UNTO GOD THROUGH JESUS CHRIST OUR LORD.
Romans 6:1-11 (KJV)
- It is not about literally washing your sins away, but signifies the washing away of sin
The Importance of Revelation
16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
Mark 16:16 (KJV)
The Divine Approach
To Believer requires Faith to believe
6 But WITHOUT FAITH IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO PLEASE HIM: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
Heb 11:6 (KJV)
Abraham, the father of us all marked the beginning of our Faith
6 Even as ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.
7 KNOW YE THEREFORE THAT THEY WHICH ARE OF FAITH, THE SAME ARE THE CHILDREN OF ABRAHAM.
Gal 3:6-7 (KJV)
How Revelation Works: The Word Pierces the Darkness
6 For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, HATH SHINED IN OUR HEARTS, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
2 Cor 4:6 (KJV)
37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?
38 THEN PETER SAID UNTO THEM, REPENT, AND BE BAPTIZED EVERY ONE OF YOU IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST FOR THE REMISSION OF SINS, AND YE SHALL RECEIVE THE GIFT OF THE HOLY GHOST.
39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation.
41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.
Acts 2:37-41 (KJV)
Baptism is the answer of a good conscience toward God
18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;
20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.
21 THE LIKE FIGURE WHEREUNTO EVEN BAPTISM DOTH ALSO NOW SAVE US (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the ANSWER OF A GOOD CONSCIENCE TOWARD GOD,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:
22 Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.
1 Peter 3:18-22 (KJV)
- i.e. Baptism is your expression of a GOOD CONSCIENCE towards God, your fellowship assembly, towards others – the world.
- Therefore, according to the Bible, Christian baptism is important because it is a step of obedience—publicly declaring faith in Christ and commitment to Him—an identification with Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection and His name.
- Notice, we take on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ just as a woman would take on the name of her husband. Therefore we are not ashamed to be identified with Him.
Apollos receives the Word – receives the Holy Ghost
1 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,
2 He said unto them, HAVE YE RECEIVED THE HOLY GHOST SINCE YE BELIEVED? AND THEY SAID UNTO HIM, WE HAVE NOT SO MUCH AS HEARD WHETHER THERE BE ANY HOLY GHOST.
3 AND HE SAID UNTO THEM, UNTO WHAT THEN WERE YE BAPTIZED? AND THEY SAID, UNTO JOHN'S BAPTISM.
(Notice: John’s Baptism the Message of the Hour, until more light came, 1 John 1:7 – i.e. The New Testament was now in effect, effective upon the death and resurrection of the tester!)
4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on CHRIST JESUS. (Notice: Their experience up until this time was incomplete)
5 When they heard this, THEY WERE BAPTIZED IN THE NAME OF THE LORD JESUS.
6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.
7 And all the men were about twelve.
Acts 19:1-7 (KJV)
- Notice: The Light struck the Seed!
- NB: Baptism is Foundational – If done incorrectly your experience with God is compromised
- Notice that John’s baptism was superseded by BAPTISM IN THE NAME OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST
i.e. But if we WALK IN THE LIGHT, as he is in the light, we have FELLOWSHIP one with another, and the BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST HIS SON CLEANSETH US FROM ALL SIN. 1 John 1:7 (KJV)
John the Baptist Recognised there was another Message to Follow His
11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: BUT HE THAT COMETH AFTER ME IS MIGHTIER THAN I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: HE SHALL BAPTIZE YOU WITH THE HOLY GHOST, AND WITH FIRE: Matt 3:11 (KJV)
traditional modes of baptism
Most Churches today follow the traditional modes of baptism handed down by their founders that involves sprinkling, baptism in titles and the baptism of babies, all of which do not find their origin in the Holy Scriptures. Does it really matter?
The Scriptures tell us that there is only one way to be baptised
4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;
5 One Lord, one faith, ONE BAPTISM,
6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
Eph 4:4-6 (KJV)
Keeping it Scriptural
48 He that rejecteth me, and RECEIVETH NOT MY WORDS, hath one that judgeth him: THE WORD THAT I HAVE SPOKEN, THE SAME SHALL JUDGE HIM IN THE LAST day.
John 12:48 (KJV)
- That Word will echo back on the Day of Judgement (It is all recorded)
Church Traditions are the Great Enemies of Divine Revelation
13 Making the WORD OF GOD OF NONE EFFECT THROUGH YOUR TRADITION, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.
Mark 7:13 (KJV)
- Traditions can start out of anything which results in people following others without having the spiritual understanding of why they are doing it. Examples could be, joining church, getting baptised, taking communion and foot-washing and even singing spiritual songs as a genre.
Whatsoever is not of faith is sin
23 And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: FOR WHATSOEVER IS NOT OF FAITH IS SIN.
Romans 14:23 (KJV)
Blessing of Hearing and Keeping the WORD
28 But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that HEAR THE WORD OF GOD, AND KEEP IT.
Luke 11:28 (KJV)
8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
Gal 1:8 (KJV)
Famine for hearing THE WORDS OF THE LORD
11 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but OF HEARING THE WORDS OF THE LORD:
Amos 8:11 (KJV)
Baptism is by Full immersion
NB: The Greek for the word ‘baptizo’ means to immerse, plunge, dip, or bury in water. The very Greek word itself excludes it from meaning “sprinkling.”
23 And John also was baptizing in Aenon near to Salim, because THERE WAS MUCH WATER THERE: and they came, and were baptized.
John 3:23 (KJV)
THEY WENT DOWN BOTH INTO THE WATER
38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and THEY WENT DOWN BOTH INTO THE WATER, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.
Acts 8:38 (KJV)
Baptism is in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ
Acts 2:38 or Matthew 28:19?
Most all churches today follow a literal interpretation of Matthew 28:19: “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:” (Even through in the Book of Acts, it was not always so.) Yet...on the day of Pentecost, the inauguration of the Christian Church, Peter commanded the people thusly: “...Repent, and be baptised every one of you in the name of JESUS CHRIST for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” ACTS 2:38
Notice, that those baptised contrary to Peter’s formula were commanded to be re-baptised in the name of the Lord, as were for example John the Baptist’s disciples who were baptised unto John’s Baptism of repentance (ACTS 19:1-7). If there was a need for re-baptism then, we have to ask now how much more would the need would be for re-baptism for those baptised using the Trinity formula, which we now understand to be compromised teaching?

THE CHURCH MUST TEACH BAPTISM
60-0911E FIVE DEFINITE IDENTIFICATIONS OF THE TRUE CHURCH OF THE LIVING GOD
« 117 † NOW, ALSO THE CHURCH MUST TEACH BAPTISM. IT MUST BE BAPTIZED. THAT WAS THE COMMISSION. Jesus said here in Mark 16, we'll just use it. "He that believeth and is baptized." BELIEVE FIRST, AND THEN BE BAPTIZED FOR THE REMISSION OF YOUR SINS, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
"And the Holy Ghost will also come upon..." will be a teaching of the church, for Jesus said in Luke 24:49... We're right close to it, so let's just turn to it just a second, the 49th verse here. We read the 46th and 47th. Look at the 49th.
And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye,... (or wait, "Tarry" means "wait.")... in the city of Jerusalem, until you're endued with power from on high.
IF CHRIST WOULD NOT LET A BUNCH OF MEN WHO'D WALKED WITH HIM FOR THREE AND A HALF YEARS GO PREACH ANY GOSPEL, OR COULD NOT PREACH ANY GOSPEL UNTIL THEY WAITED FOR THE HOLY GHOST, THE CHURCH TODAY HAS TO DO THE SAME THING. WAIT FOR THE HOLY GHOST.
